PHSD INSTRUCTORS

Jack Lee - Jack has been regarded as one of the World’s great pipers for over 30 years. In addition to being the Pipe Sergeant of SFU since its inception, Jack has won all the top solo prizes in piping at least once: both Gold Medals, Clasp at Inverness (2), Silver Star from Inverness (4), Bratach Gorm from London (2), the Glenfiddich Championship and many more. Jack has an incredible record as a teacher of pipers and pipe bands. He and his sons produce excellent chanter reeds and have an online archive of over 1,100 recordings made by Jack. See www.leeandsonsbagpipes.com for details.

J. Reid Maxwell - Reid is certainly one of today’s most decorated drummers. When the SFU Pipe Band captured the Worlds in 1995, Reid became the first person in history to lead the drum corps of two different bands to the world championship.
Reid obtained his 18th World Championship, an amazing feat by any standard. Reid’s engaging style captures students’ imaginations wherever he teaches, and especially at PHSD!

And more - We are excited to have six-time World Champion Pipe-Major Terry Lee back this year, and also the exceptional Donald Lindsay on the piping staff, as well as Stuart Liddel, one of the most successful piper and pipe-majors of 2011 and D-M Jason Paguio leading the drum-major course. There isn’t a more dedicated team of people than the world-class players and dance instructors that Jack and Reid assemble for PHSD. Each year, some of the World’s best and most consistent solo and band competitors line up to teach classes at all levels, and the results are always great! Students are overwhelmingly enthusiastic about the quality of instruction they receive at PHSD!

CLASSES FOR PIPERS AND DRUMMERS

All participants receive over six hours of formal instruction each day. Structured according to skill level and interest, music classes cover basic to advanced exercises, practice technique for solo players and bands, instrument maintenance and tuning. There is discussion of everything from music theory and composition to dress and deportment. As always, the school has instructors on hand for the needs and pace of beginners.

Advanced Piping & Drumming
We have a challenging program to meet the needs of Grade 1 amateur or new professional players on bagpipes or snare drum. PHSD offers an intensive, performance-oriented program that will refine your playing ability and build your knowledge. Be sure to indicate “advanced program” on the registration form.

Band Sessions
A portion of each day will be devoted to small-group or full-band critique, with an emphasis on band ensemble. Bands of all sizes and skill levels are encouraged to participate.

Evening Acivities
Formal classes end at 5:00 pm but the learning and fun are far from over! We offer evening workshops on a wide range of interesting topics, such as Yoga, Maintenance, Fun Dances, Composing, Whistles and many others. Then, the fun continues with the Silver Star Cup, PHSD’s Got Talent, PHSD Choreography Challenge and Instructor Recitals. And for the young and brave…you won’t want to miss the famous PHSD water fight!

Personal Instruction

While you’re here, you’ll get the chance to work one-on-one with instructors. PHSD provides opportunities for working on solo competition tunes and scores, learning new piobaireachds, or just getting advice on any aspect of your piping or drumming.

DRUM MAJOR INSTRUCTION

The drum major course runs full-time this year [Week 1 only], and covers marching, dress, drill and flourishing techniques. The drum major course can be taken as a full course, or it can be blended with other classes.

Jason is the Drum-Major for SFU and the current World Champion. Jason is a repeat winner of the world’s top prize for pipe band drum majors, and he’ll be at PHSD to conduct our drum-major session, which this year is a full session, and does not have to be combined with other studies. Learn what it takes to be a great D-M from one of the greats!
